Laboratory of Integrative Neurosciences

In the Laboratory of Integrative Neurosciences we use multidisciplinary techniques to integrate genomic approaches, functional analysis, anatomy and behavior to interrogate aspects of Brain Evolution and Development and its effect on the mental health of the population.

The brain has approximately eighty-six trillion neurons, and more than a trillion neuronal connections. These units work in coordination, generating activation networks that allow brain processing of internal and environmental information, in order to be able to react adequately to different life scenarios. However, how different organizational levels are integrated, from molecules to behavior, is still an enigma for neuroscientists and a true "bottleneck" for the transfer of knowledge to health and educational fields. During the last decades, scientific knowledge in areas of intrauterine and postnatal ontogenetic development of the central nervous system has advanced dramatically, allowing the establishment of relationships between brain development, the adaptability of individuals, and the vulnerability of the developing brain to endogenous and environmental determinants.
